Grinding It Out: The Making of McDonald's by Roy Kroc

1. I chose to read grinding it out because I’m fascinated by how McDonald’s became one of the most popular fast food chains in the world. The book starts out by Kroc’s humble beginnings and him wanting to make a business and become a great entrepreneur. One of the things that stuck out to me the most would have to be how humble he started off. It’s incredible what you can achieve if you just dedicate time and effort into something.

2. I believe that Kroc is a very resilient man because of how he went from small jobs and bad mistakes to getting his life together and building a huge fast food chain. His determination to be the best businessman did not stop and he never gave up his dream.

3. I never knew the backstory to McDonald’s so I came into this believing that Kroc was the founder of McDonald’s when in reality McDonald’s already existed but Kroc made it into this big fast food chain. This is was confusing to me because I had already pictured something else in mind.

4. I would ask…
·     If you could change the menu at McDonald’s, what would you change it to?
·     Would you have ever believed someone if they told you that McDonald’s was going to be one of the most famous fast food chains in the world?

5. I think his opinion was to never stop. Even when he believed that he couldn’t be successful he later got back on his feet and started trying again. I believe in this because nothing in life comes easy. We have to keep going and think of the end goal.

  1. Great post Laura! I did not get a chance to read this book, so I am happy I got to know a bit more about it from your post. I also was not familiar with McDonald’s history and story. But it interesting to learn about the perseverance Kroc had to his business and ultimately the success of McDonalds as we know it today!

  2. Hey Lau, this was a very interesting post to me. I did not read this book or any of the reflections, so it was cool to see what you learned and gained from this book. I can only imagine what you were thinking when you found out McDonalds had already existed. I did not know that until just now, which is so crazy because all we ever think of is this massive fast food restaurant that is cheap and greasy.
